Diwali - The Festival of Lights
Diwali or Deepavali is one of the biggest festivals celebrated throughout India and other countries and many people across the world today. In north India, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years. In south India, Diwali is the celebration of Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura (Naraka, an asura king).
Below are the key dates of Diwali with a few pointers on what could be done on each of those days,
29th Oct 2024 - Day 1 - Dhanteras
pray to Lord Dhanvantari (the God of Ayurveda) for health, healing and wellness
30th October - Day 2 - Roop Chaturdashi or Choti Deepavali
Pray to the Goddess to remove negativity - chant the Devi Kavacham
Abhyanga Massage (with warm Sesame or Coconut oil)
Ubtan (Sandalwood Paste concoction) application
31st October - Day 3 - Deepavali (main Diwali day)
Lakshmi Puja - Pray to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, abundance and prosperity
1st November - Day 4 - Govardhan Puja
Krishna raised Govardhan mountain to protect the people of Mathura from Lord Indra’s wrath of torrential rains
use of seasonal crops to make Prasad (Annakut)
Cows are honored as they are important in agriculture
2nd November - Day 5 - Bhai Dooj
celebrates the special bond between Sisters and Brothers
Brothers give gifts to sisters
Sisters prepare a feast for their brothers and pray for their longevity and good life
I wish you all a happy Diwali and may the light within you shine bright always and overcome any darkness around you.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
Shweta
